Andrew Hartley

Patent & Registered Design Attorney - Partner

I qualified as a U.K. Chartered and a European Patent Attorney in 2000. Before then, I attained a degree and a PhD in biochemistry, and carried out post-doctoral research as a biochemist at the Royal Free Hospital in London.

I have worked in diverse technical fields, including many aspects of PVC production, medical and research instrumentation, medical implants, many aspects of biochemistry and biotechnology including fermentation reactions and selection of cloned cells, supports for catalysts, fire alarms and extinguishing systems, aspects of aerospace technology, general mechanical inventions and ballistic armour.

I have considerable experience at drafting patent applications in various fields and steering applications through the examination procedure throughout the world. I also represent clients in opposition and appeal proceedings before the European Patent Office (both opposing and defending patents), as well as advising on matters of infringement, validity and freedom-to-operate. I have worked with barristers representing clients and have experience in representation at hearings at the U.K. Intellectual Property Office.
